Technical information

This large collection of posters was scanned over a period of two years. The project's Digital Photographer captured each war poster using a Power Phase FX digital camera system. Each poster was be saved as a high-resolution 24-bit color, uncompressed TIFF image, with a minimum resolution of 300 pixels per inch. We also derived thumbnail and screen-size "reference" images for presentation on the web. Our TIFF "master" images were stored on DVD and RAID-array storage.

The project Metadata Cataloging Specialist used the following metadata scheme to describe each digitized war poster:

  • Unique Digital Identifier
  • Other Identifier(s)
  • Title
  • Series
  • Caption
  • Creator
  • Publisher
  • Other contributors
  • Year of creation
  • Owning Repository
  • Object Location
  • Ownership History
  • Medium
  • Media
  • Original Dimensions
  • Description
  • Subject Terms
  • Use/Rights
  • Notes
  • File Format
  • Bit Depth
  • Resolution

These metadata elements, plus other infromation, were encoded using XML. XML-encoded metadata was then imported into a database system designed for this project. This database is what you use when searching the collection.
